A Brief History of Morse Code

Morse code was developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for the electric telegraph — the first system that could send a message across continents in minutes instead of weeks. Each letter became a unique pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). The most famous Morse signal, SOS (··· −−− ···), was adopted as the international distress call in 1908. Commercial telegraphy has faded, but Morse code is still used by amateur radio operators worldwide, and several navies still train sailors in flashing-light Morse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Morse code still used today?

Yes — mainly by amateur (ham) radio operators, and it remains a backup communication method in aviation and the military. It's also a popular hobby skill, and scouts still learn it.

What is SOS in Morse code?

SOS is ··· −−− ··· (three dots, three dashes, three dots). It was chosen because the pattern is unmistakable, not because it stands for any words.

How long does it take to learn Morse code?

With 15–20 minutes of daily practice using the audio playback above, most people memorize the full alphabet within two to three weeks.

Can I translate Morse code back to English?

Yes — click the ⇄ toggle to switch to Morse → English mode, paste Morse code (dots and dashes, a space between letters, / between words), and the English text appears instantly.
